                Pollock School and Community Center

                Picture
The community center has a well-stocked Reading Room (library). It contains many new books for all ages.

The town finance office is also located in the center.

Several businesses can be found in the building and there is room for more.

                Campbell County Wind Farm Challenge

With the closing on the elementary school in Pollock, the community was left with the challenge of finding $20,000 to replace the rental money the school used to produce. Dakota Plains Energy issued a challenge grant to the community–they would match money earned by the community up to $10,000. That goal is almost reached.

                The Alumni Challenge

Pollock alumni, friends and family, we have been issued a challenge from Dr. Allan Knudson a 1947 graduate of PHS. He recently donated $1000 to the Pollock Community Center and has challenged others to also make a donation. The donations will help maintain the Pollock Community Center as a gathering place for events and activities in the Pollock area. Any size donation is welcome. Checks can be made payable to the Pollock Men’s Club (note donation is for community center). Mail to Town of Pollock, PO Box 57, Pollock SD 57648 or drop yours off at the city office next time your back for a visit. Spread the word on Facebook it worked great for the Pizza drive.

The Pollock community successfully met the challenge

                Looking forward

                Dear Pollock Friends and Family,

As many of you already know, the Pollock School is no longer involved in the teaching of our youth. The Pollock School consolidated with the Mobridge School, which has become the Mobridge-Pollock School District, and most of the students are now attending school in Mobridge, while a few decided to venture in different directions.
The Pollock School building has now become a “Community Center” with businesses operating in some of the classrooms. The gym and kitchen has provided people a place to gather for wedding receptions, family and class reunions, or just a place to go and spend time reminiscing or shooting some hoops.
The cost to keep this Community Center open has fallen on the shoulders of the Town of Pollock. The city council members want to see the Community Center stay open, but the burden is too much for the tax payers. So the council members asked the public for their help. We had many busy bees in our midst, and they proved how much they want to keep the Community Center open. Over $10,000 has been raised in less than six months, and the proposed Campbell County Wind Farm will add matching funds of $10,000.
The Town of Pollock budgets almost $50,000 each year to keep this Community Center open. Just to give you an example of expenses for the Center, we spend approximately $30,000 a year in utility costs and this year the heating company that services our furnace told us that we need to add antifreeze to the system, at a cost of $20,000 PLUS labor. The Town of Pollock does not have this money, so we’ll have to opt out of adding the antifreeze this year.
In order to continue operating the Center, we need your help and support in the form of a tax-deductible donation. The people of this community are working very hard to keep the doors open, and we would be more than happy to include your generous donation of $100 or more in that endeavor. However, please note that any donation amount is always welcomed. We are also seeking investors to help a former Pollock School Alumnus work on developing apartments in some of the classrooms. This would provide rent, which would help with expenses in the building.
I thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to whatever support you can provide. If you are sending your donation in the form of a check, please make it payable to the Pollock Men’s Club, % Orland Geigle, 11350 296th Ave., Pollock, SD 57648. The Men’s Club has stepped in to help the Town of Pollock with managing the funds for fundraisers.
Thank you for your consideration. The Pollock community couldn’t do it without the generosity of donors like yourself.
Thanks, Linda Meyer, Pollock Town Board City Councilwoman
